The dipole is the world's most popular antenna. Under optimum conditions the antenna should be raised 1/2 wavelength above ground with the broadsides in line with the direction most desirable for work. Inverted-vee formulations also work well for those of us unable to achieve decent height above ground.

The Inverted-vee dipole is supported right at the center (also the point of maximum radiation) - on bands, like 40m, the Inverted-vee can be a powerful high performance antenna even at modest heights like 30 feet above the ground.
